Scouts and Cav are capable of blowing right past most units in a layer. Or something like that. So most your layer is useless against them. Usually. But under some circumstances, they hit the layering and die uselessly. I don't get it myself...But they will ALWAYS kill your pikeman (in my experience so far), which is probably why the game labels pikes as "effective" against cav. (they're not). So I suppose a large enough layer with pikes will absorb cav hits for a turn or 3 allowing archers to chew them up and spit them out. Bet if you depended on it though, cav's will ignore the pikeman. Lol. I don't really get it that well myself.
