The battle range starts at the greatest units range +200.

archers have a range of 1200, so 1200+200 = 1400, the initial battle range

being a level 10 valley the cav have hbr of 10 meaning they can move 1500 yards per round.

So because the defenders move first the cav run right into the archers (the ignore the pikes/swords for whatever reason - i can find if you really want).

When you add a ballista the initial battle range becomes 1600 (1400 ballista range + 200) meaning when the cav move they stop 100 yards short of the archers.

The defenders turn comes, Pikes and swords advance into cav, some die, archers sit and shoot because thats what they do. i dont know why both pikes and swords die.. and i wont try explain it.

but thats what i think happens.
I agree. The ballista is there to extend range. It is not there to do some fiendish killing. So you only need one. Sending 2000 is not necessary, and also gives people the wrong idea that you have to be "wealthy" to farm this kind of valley.

One ballista. Enough archers to one-shot the cavs and clean up the rest, which is a lot more than you might guess without experience. A diverse layer. That's what you need here.
