OMG WHAT A NOOB! LOL! 1 WAREHOUSE?

Your supposed to have at least 15 warehouses so you keep resources if you get plundered. DUH

Ken, I think you might want to read his signature and location......

I have heard of a tip that should be used in lumber cities and iron cities.

The tip is, in a lumber or iron city, you should only put 1 barracks or 0 ( recommended ), and you may have a rally spot, you surely need a market place, you need a academy with lvl 2+, and you may want an embassy ( no embassy also can ) , you 'MUST' build a relief station and feasting hall, no inn ( if you have filled ur Feasting hall, no problem ) and a beacon tower ( must ). And 9-11 cottages just in case you don't have any more people to work, and the rest, warehouses ( preferably lvl 9 if from a lvl 10 barb, one lvl 10 and others, lvl 9 or 10 ).

shouldn't that be a way to build lumber and iron cities?

no, you dont need any warehouses, they are a waste of space

For a lumber city that seems like to many cottages (9) to me.. unless u either
    1) have a very high attack hero
    2) are not playing much.
You could get down to 5 lvl 10 cottages in a lumber city and have a idle pop of around 9500, 6 cottages 15000.. that is plenty of idle pop if you play some what regularly.. if u needed to que up a lot of troops for the night or a day you can drop production to 0 and que up. I would say 6 at most for a lumber city and 5 if your a trooper.
(this is for 40 lvl 9 saw mills)

looks like you got 32k idle pop in ur screen shot, thats ridiculous imo.

i wouldnt say this is the best. my best would have 40 farms not 40 sawmills, only because in my best i would have my best defences. so i would stockpile resources there.
in which case 40 mills become useless

but it is good. id go with one less cottage and one more barrack as well.. but thats just me.

40 farms are useless, period. On 90% of the servers you can still make more food selling wood even Without forests then you could with 40 lvl 10 farms and 10 lvl 10 lakes. On mine, current prices 7g for food, 40g for wood. 500k wood per hour translates into 2.85 million food per hour, as opposed to the rough max of 1.5 mil with farms.

The whole cottage/barrack argument is pointless IMO, as it all depends directly on your atk hero and play time.
