That Lorraine thing always bugged me.
Yes, LL has lower map coordinates, but it's NORTH of UL.
The only argument I see is the ancient Egypt argument. Upper Egypt was in the south, and Lower Egypt was in the north. the reason was twofold. Most importantly, the Nile flows south, so "down-river" was the the lower half. Also, the terrain in Upper Egypt was a bit taller above sea level than Lower Egypt, so it was technically the "higher" half.
but since there is no real rivers or terrain differentiation like that in Evony, I can't really see that argument being used.
