As Thor points out, there are scores of example threads on these forums... try a suitable search description and you'll be flooded.

As you'll see from a comparison of Dafi's and my city... the best layout is pretty clear:

Since this isn't just a "show me your favorite city" thread, here's what a good layout looks like for a beginner city:

If you're likely to be less active than hardcore gamers, reduce the number of barracks and keep a few more cottages, so you can build bigger blocks of troops at once, but less frequently.

The best advice is to just grow big and strong as quick as you can, and not invest too much time into building cities. Conquer level 10 NPC's and convert them into something similar to the top image of this post, but with the same advice re activity levels.

Hey DC... the only problem I see with the 18 barracks set up vs. the 16 barracks set up is when you're hero gets to the 300+ attack lvl and your troop build times are much faster, having idle population becomes more valuable. For those that cannot be on 12-18 hours a day and queue troops every hour or so, a larger idle population (i.e. a couple more barracks) would be better. I prefer 16 barracks to 18... either variation is among the best set ups IMHO

obviously still in progress, but I have 3 identical towns to these, and each one is winged by 1 all lumber and 1 all iron town that each have 23 barraks and none of the non essential stuff...

i know ppl will say markets aren't necessary, but to me they are, and same with inn's but these towns are further apart and a cpl in diff states so it's easier for me just to sacrifice the 1 barrack for an inn..

I wouldn't recommend having 4 farms until you get some ballistas Angela, building them farm, sawmill, quarry, mine is a decent start
