I know. I take over alot of cities, mostly for spite. 1) and 5) are correct answers. 2)has some merit tho. once you lower a cities loyalty to 5 or less, the gates open. then you fight the army by itself ,since you sorta killed all the wall forts in order to get loyalty to < 5

there are some great tactics you can use by toggling the gates open or closed at the right times. too bad 99.9% of you are not in my alliance and will have to find out the hard way.

Having just been attacked 10 min ago, I thought I would share my experience and comments about gates opened or closed...

    Situation
    ----------------
My city is lvl10 with lvl8 walls with the following defenses:
    - roughly 22k troops (mostly warriors)
    - 3k wall defenses (1k towers, 1k traps, 1k misc)

I was being attacked by 4 waves:
    - 1st was 50k solders (20k in archers), 350 ballistas
    - 2nd was 3k soldiers (not sure why bother)
    - 3rd was 3k soldiers (not sure why bother)
    - 4th was 750 pikeman (I think this was just for spite or to gain honor by beating me down)

    Outcome
    --------------------
    (1) I had 1 1/2 hours so I sent ALL my resources to a neighboring city so when they attacked, they would get nothing and not be motivated to attack again in the future

    (2) CLOSED MY GATES. During the attack, they destroyed all my wall defenses (towers and traps), BUT not a single of my 22k troops were touched. They would have been able to raid my resources but since I moved everything, they got zero.

    (3) Since the second wave of attacks were small, I I OPENED MY GATES and let my army fight. I won the second and third battles (and got 8k in honor, btw). I only lost a few troops.

    (4) Then I CLOSED MY GATES. with the 750 pikes coming, I decided I didn't want to lose warriors to them so i closed my gates and let my traps take some of them out (for some reason, not all the traps from the first wave were destroyed). Turns out the player gave up and recalled this attack

    (5) Finally, I applied Truce. I figured I needed a day to move resources back around and to rebuild my walls.

    CONCLUSION
    ----------------
Gates open or closed? Keeping the gates closed protects your troops. period. Keeping your gates closed however makes it easier for them to take your resources since the only thing stopping them is your wall defenses. Whether you have troops in the city or not, as long as your gates are closed, the troops are ignored.

Personally, I plan to keep my gates closed because I can shift my resources around and buy more if they get plundered. Rebuilding troops after they get slaughtered defending your resources doesn't sound like a fun option to me and takes waaayyy too long.

    I hope my experience helps

This helps, Baron, thanks. I wonder though...if the enemy has battering rams, can they brfeak down your gate at fight the troops inside? It'll be a long, long time before I'm able to figure that out (I hope).
